Hello, Your Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta
Today is Saturday, which means we have an FSD meeting in Kakamega! Today was our final meeting, and it was really awesome getting to see everyone in the office. Finally, a week where everyone was somewhat healthy! ☺ We all shared our ups and downs of the week, and most everyone seems to be enjoying their time in their host organization and host family.
The meeting ended earlier than expected, and rather than waiting an hour for lunch, I decided to try and see the President of Kenya since he was going to be in town.
I got way more than I bargained for. We happened to be walking on the road where his car was driving, and he was greeting everyone on the streets from his car. Carpe Diem, right? I wasn’t going to pass up this opportunity, so I ran to the front and began waving frantically at him. Not only did I get to see him, but guess what? HE WAVED BACK!!!! It was awesome!!!! I am checking “having the Kenyan president wave at me” off my bucket list! This was definitely one of the highlights of my Kenyan experience so far.
Other than that, work has been really good this week. I am currently working with the different Iguhu doctors and staff workers planning a hand hygiene and malaria/diarrhea prevention campaign. I realized that it would be better for me to focus on prevention during my internship because it is a very sustainable approach in the healthcare setting. Also, most of the diseases here in Kenya are very preventable!
Live. Love. Learn. As I end today’s blog, I want to share with you the three words that FSD stresses us to focus on. Every day in Kenya brings newer and more wonderful experiences. As I reach the midway point for my trip, I need to take these three words to heart as much as possible. Live. Love. Learn.
